Great Canary Island Telescope

The Great Canary Island Telescope (also known as GTC or GRANTECAN) is a Spanish project involving the construction of the biggest optical telescope in the world.
The complex houses a telescope with a 10m diameter and is located in the Roque de Los Muchachos observatory on the island of La Palma, at an altitude of 2000m. It is a three-building complex with the telescope building as such, a utility building and an auxiliary building where the complex’s power is generated.
The facilities installed in the complex include automated and centrally managed climate control, backup power generation systems, fire protection (detection and extinction) and diesel-fuel equipment.
The building’s particular characteristics allow the climate control system in the telescope room to maintain a uniform indoor temperature throughout its volume.
In non-observation periods, the intermediate air chamber has the same temperature and humidity conditions as the telescope room.
